The city of Savannah and the State of Georgia were both founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733 under a charter with King George II, whom the State was named after. Savannah, Georgia's first city, was established on a 40 ft. bluff overlooking the Savannah River. The city's layout was overseen by Oglethorpe, and incorporated the planting of many live oaks and the design of individual squares and parks which gave Savannah a truly distinguished appearance, that has been enjoyed for generations since.
Not long after the city's establishment, the boom of trade began for Savannah and with the eventual exportation of cotton and other agricultural products via transoceanic merchant ships,Savannah became the port city of the south.
Today, Savannah is visited by more than 7 million visitors annually, and it's beauty has only refined with age. The many parks , cobble - stone streets and stately mansions are all here for everyone to enjoy for generations to come.
